In the U.K and Europe, today is the day that we remember those who died for
us during the War. Soldiers lost their lives, families, mourned the loss of their loved ones. We will remember them, and we will pray for them. That God is Merciful unto them and that their souls may rest in peace.

It’s not a recognised holiday here in Finland, Europe. In three weeks it’s Finnish Independence Day -a public holiday – when Finns remember the dead who sacrificed their lives, so that Finland would be free. (1917)
War veterans from other wars (eg WW2) are also remembered then.
I found out elsewhere that it was at 11am on 11th of 11th that the Armistice was signed – hence the phrase at the eleventh hour
(or maybe the phrase came first and they remembered it)
