This is so true. The chaplain at my children’s grade school has told the graduating eighth graders so many times that they WILL become like the friends they keep. It happens naturally, and so they should be very careful about who they hang around with. I always thought it was wise and holy advice.

Rosemary, it is a good thing for people to bear in mind. I think the teacher guiding his/her pupils about friendship is an excellent thing. It is all too easy to build friendships which are not fruitful, not loving, not supportive. I have made the mistake myself, with friends, or people i thought were friends. Sometimes as hard as it seems at the time, even though we might like a friend a lot, we do have to think about where the friendship is leading us, or whether or not it is a true friendship.

Good friends never seek to harm, embarrass, ridicule or ignore for example…sometimes it is so subtly done that one can berate themselves for being over sensitive…but all these things taken together mean that not so much a friendship has been formed, as a relationship that needs to be pruned!
